The sector in figures

According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the transport sector comprised more than 68,000 businesses at the start of the fourth quarter of 2024. That represents 2.9 per cent of all businesses in the Netherlands.

According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), 204,000 people were employed in the sector in 2024, representing 4.3 per cent of the total workforce. Transport and storage accounted for 4.8 per cent of total value added in that year. Of all transport companies, 88 per cent are active in land transport.

Turnover in 2025 was 4.4 per cent higher than in 2024, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). However, productivity continues to lag behind: value added per hour worked in the Netherlands was 66 euros in 2024, compared with 74 euros in Belgium.

And what’s missing. There are no hard, national figures for the driver shortage, no sector-wide profit margin for road transport, and no measured figures for AI or system adoption within the supply chain. I won’t fill those gaps with an estimate. They are the reason why this sign starts with your own lanes.
