The audit for mechanical engineering

The sector in figures

The engineering sector is booming. According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), production in March 2026 was 16.5 per cent higher than a year earlier, and in April 2026 it was 21.6 per cent higher. The sector as a whole grew by 1.7 per cent and 4.7 per cent in those months respectively.

Turnover is also following suit. In the first quarter of 2026, turnover in the machinery industry was 10.1 per cent higher than a year earlier, compared with 2.2 per cent for industry as a whole, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

There is a counterargument to this that I won’t dismiss. Business confidence in the industry stood at minus 10.9 at the start of the second quarter of 2026. At the same time, there were 29,100 job vacancies in the first quarter and 24 per cent of business owners reported a staff shortage. Full order books and gloomy confidence go hand in hand here. I’d rather explore why that is in a conversation than come up with an explanation off the top of my head.

There are no verifiable figures for the number of mechanical engineering firms or people employed in this niche. The figures currently circulating are contradictory. Lead times and AI adoption have not been measured either.
